Kochi is home to 19 sake breweries, and Tosa Brewing is one of them. The brewery has been making sake since 1877 and is home to Keigetsu, a sake brand known for its tanrei karakuchi style—a light, clean, dry style with a crisp taste that pairs especially well with food.
Located in northern Kochi, the Tosa Reihoku region is an ideal setting for sake brewing. With lush forests, terraced rice fields, and the pure waters of the Yoshino River, it offers two vital ingredients for sake: water and rice. At Tosa Brewing, these local ingredients are carefully transformed through a traditional brewing process, with Keigetsu earning recognition at international competitions including the International Wine Challenge in the UK and Kura Master in France.
Don’t miss the brewery tour for just ¥220. The tour offers a glimpse into the traditional process, from steaming rice and making koji to fermentation and pressing, while brewers carefully manage temperature, timing, and other conditions at every stage. Inside, large brewing tanks surround you as the aroma of steamed rice and sake fills the air.
After exploring the brewery, visitors can continue to Keigetsukan, a space dedicated to the life and work of Kochi's literary figure Ōmachi Keigetsu, whose name inspired the brand. And, of course, no visit would be complete without a sake tasting. Sample different varieties, discover your favorite—all are available for purchase at the shop. A small gift is also waiting for you at the end of the tour.
