Museum of Art, Kochi

高知県立美術館(Kochikenritsu Bijyutsukan)
Come see the works of Marc Chagall, one of the most influential modernist artists of the 20th century
Marc Chagall was a Russian-French-Jewish artist, widely respected both as an early modernist and as an important exponent of Jewish artistic tradition. At the Museum of Art, Kochi, you can admire a collection of over 1,200 of his artworks, including oil paintings and richly colored prints, which are largely based on fantastical images from his childhood memories.
Besides Chagall’s art, the museum houses a collection of over 41,000 works by about 440 international and Japanese artists, offering visitors an immersion into a variety of distinct styles of creative expression. The Museum Hall is also equipped with a Noh (classical Japanese dance-drama) stage and conventional stage which serves as a place to showcase films, traditional performing arts, music performances, and much more.
With the exception of the exhibition rooms, museum entrance is free, so visitors are welcome to stop by for a quiet cup of coffee at the café, have a look around the museum shop, or view the building itself, which was built based on traditional Kochi building techniques and is surrounded by water features and greenery. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the Museum of Art, Kochi.
