Uemachi Station
うえまち駅(Uemachi Eki)A retro railway carriage honoring a pioneer of Japanese civil engineering
Opened in April 2021, inside this unusual “station” you will find a wooden Ro481 railway carriage from the Meiji period (1868–1912), which has been restored to how it looked during its heyday. The elegant woodwork and details, such as the delicate porcelain sink and elaborate iron luggage racks, will put you in mind of the golden age of rail travel.
The four-wheeled second class carriage is the only one of its kind left in Japan, and is being preserved as a tribute to local Mitsuaki Tanaka, who we have to thank for the creation of the Dosan train line that connects many cities and towns in Kochi. Nearby, a bronze statue was raised to commemorate another Sakawa-born pioneer of Japanese civil engineering, Isami Hiroi.
The Uemachi area of Sakawa is dotted with several retro buildings to explore, and is just a short walk away from Makino Park, a large garden dedicated to Dr. Tomitaro Makino, another local hero considered the father of Japanese botany.
Uemachi Station also houses the local tourist information center so you can ask for tips on what to see.
