Nakatsu Gorge

中津渓谷(Nakatsu Keikoku)
Enjoy a short trek along the bluest of rivers
The gorge rises above the Nakatsu River, a tributary to the glowing blue Niyodo River that stretches out further below. In good weather visitors can see the iconic “Niyodo Blue” color of the water as it pools in basins around the gorge.
A gentle 2.3 km path follows the riverside, occasionally crossing over the Nakatsu River via steppingstones and little bridges. The trail ends at the Uryu no Taki waterfall, where the rushing river plunges down 20 meters to fill the limpid blue pools along the trail. Be sure to keep an eye out for the stone statues of the shichifukujin (Seven Gods of Fortune) dotted around the path, who seem to play hide and seek among the massive boulders and lush moss.
The gorge is accessible year round but is particularly popular as a spot to cool down during the summer, and during the autumn when the red and orange leaves contrast beautifully with the clear blue river. For those who want to extend their stay a little longer, a nearby inn offers relaxing hot springs for day trippers.
