Aso Chinkabashi (submersible bridge)
浅尾沈下橋 (Aso Chinkabashi)A bridge that frames a timeless view
While Kochi has many chinkabashi, stocky bridges built without railings so they can withstand flooding, the Aso Chinkabashi is perhaps the most scenic of all. Stretching 121-meters across the clear Niyodo River, the bridge leads the eye to the tiny hamlet of Kamaida, framed by the lushly forested mountains.
The bridge has a new claim to fame, as it was featured in the 2021 animated film “BELLE,” a magical story directed by Mamoru Hosoda that received a 14-minute long standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
