Muroto Schoolhouse Aquarium
むろと廃校水族館(Muroto Haiko Suizokukan)An old school converted into an aquarium: a first in Japan
Muroto Schoolhouse Aquarium is an aquarium created from an abandoned elementary school. The repurposing of the school saw the installation of a large outdoor pool for sea turtles. In rooms that were once classrooms, you will encounter over 50 species of creatures found in the seas surrounding Kochi including sea bream and yellowtail, octopus, sea cucumbers, hammerhead sharks, and deep-sea creatures.
Visitors often comment on the unique display method using the old desks and chairs from the former school building. It's also a great place to get a feel of what Japanese schools are like as well as learning about the oceans that are so important to Kochi.
