Wagashi Making and Tea Ceremony Experience
和菓⼦づくりとお茶席体験 （Wagashizukuri To Ochasekitaiken）
Learn to make Japanese sweets from a master!
Encounter centuries of Japanese sweets tradition with a wagashi (Japanese sweets) making lesson at the ancient Iwamotoji temple in Shimanto Town. With the guidance of a shokunin (master craftsman) who trained under wagashi masters in Kyoto, anyone can create delightfully edible art.
The classes are offered twice a day, either from 9:00 to 12:00 or 15:00 to 18:00 and are by reservation only, made at least one week in advance. Each participant will make four sweets, two classic and two seasonal within the first two hours, the lesson will close with a tea ceremony performance so everyone can savour some delectable wagashi with freshly whisked matcha.
The classes are conducted by the wagashi shokunin from the nearby family run wagashi store, Shoukakudou; now operated by the third generation of craftsman is passionate about bringing people closer to the art of wagashi.
Children from the age of 6 are welcome. Lessons are conducted in Japanese or English.
