The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum
【The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum】
This is a museum dedicated to one of the last samurai of the end of the Edo era, Sakamoto Ryoma. He was a hero that not only is the pride of Kochi, but of all Japan.
When the feudal military government that had ruled for over 650 years finally came to its end, this man ushered in the new era, but was tragically assassinated before seeing the fruits of his labor.
Well-known for his charm, Sakamoto Ryoma established the first trading company in Japan and famously went on a honeymoon trip with his wife, something that wasn't a custom in Japan at the time.
Through the many letters he left behind, we can really understand his thoughts and feelings.
His letters, alongside his great acheivements, make this a place that can set you on a path to follow in his footsteps.
There is a life-sized statue of Ryoma in front of the entrance and you can shake hands with him. It’s a popular photo spot!
