The Kagami (mirror) River that runs through the center of Kochi City is named after its clarity that reflects the sky and surroundings. It is said that Kochi’s beloved samurai revolutionary, Ryoma Sakamoto, used to swim in the Kagami River as a child!
Come late March, however, and the locals gather to take in the beauty of the river in collaboration with majestic cherry trees. The wide, grassy and traffic-free riverbank around the Kagami River Midori no Hiroba is a great place to take a stroll and immerse yourself in the healing warmth of spring. Even better, why not spread out a blanket and partake in the age-old tradition of a hanami (cherry blossom-viewing) picnic?
If your visit falls on a Sunday during cherry blossom season, you are in luck, as the weekly Sunday Market has all kinds of goodies on sale with which to fill your picnic basket and tummy! To really get into the season, look out for delectable sakura mochi – pink mochi rice cakes filled with sweet red bean paste and wrapped in a salted cherry leaf. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water! Have you ever tried sakura mochi before?
