Since Kochi Prefecture is more than 80% forest, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of places where you can stretch your legs surrounded by healing nature. Plus, many trails you’ll find are relatively short, perfect for the casual hiker
The hike to the source of the Shimanto River, which springs from the slopes of Mt. Irazu in Tsuno Town, is certainly one of my favorites. Once you're on the trail, it’s only about 25 minutes to the source of the river, but the moss-covered rocks and towering trees make you feel like you’re in the deep forest. Although shoes with good grip are recommended, it's a trail that hikers of all ages can enjoy. Kids (and the young at heart) will surely love the Indiana Jones vibe!
The flow of the spring at the source depends on the season and weather conditions. But even if it’s just a little more than a trickle, it’s amazing to think that one of Japan's most iconic rivers, all 196 kilometers of it, starts right here. I can never resist cupping my hands and taking a sip of the clean water when I visit. For a moment, I too, feel part of the Shimanto River
