An epic drive from Shikoku's highest point to retro towns

It can be intimidating to rent a car in a foreign country, but I hope you feel motivated after learning about Kochi’s epic mountain road, the UFO Line (yes, that’s really what it’s called)

The 27-kilometer road winds around the summit of the Ishizuchi Mountain Range, which is the highest point in Shikoku! Thanks to the high altitude, you can enjoy scenery ranging from rugged mountain ridges all the way to the Pacific Ocean on clear days. No wonder it's also known as the “Road in the Sky”

On your way back to Kochi City, I highly recommend looping around through retro Sakawa Town, which is home to one of Kochi’s most beautiful Japanese-style gardens. At Jodai-ji Temple, you will find a traditional water garden that was created over 650 years ago! If you’re a train-lover, definitely don’t miss visiting the over 100-year-old railway carriage installed at the “Uemachi Station” information center. You can sit on the red velvet seats and enjoy its classical wooden details

Last but not least, drive another 20 minutes toward Kochi City through the traditional papermaking town of Ino for a delicious plate of keema curry with a Japanese twist! The combination of ginger, miso and spice at Good Five makes for the perfectly nourishing meal especially on a chilly autumn day
