A small mountain village with the scent of yuzu and adorable trains

Umaji is a tiny village of under 900 people, located just under two hours by car from Kochi City. It is famous for its delicious yuzu citrus fruit, which has been cultivated in the area for nearly 800 years, and used in a variety of products such as juices, condiments and even body lotion!

One of the best ways to experience Umaji’s nature, yuzu-scented air and timeless beauty is to hop on the Shinrin forest railway. Not only do these trains look adorable, with a retro design, but they are also nostalgic glimpses into the past when the village prospered by producing and transporting the nationally-prized timber, Yanase cedar, over 100 years ago

96% forest, 40km away from the nearest city, no streetlights, no convenience stores – Umaji Village is a rare gem in this often chaotic world, where community and living in harmony with nature are still the norm Don't miss the view from the top of the Incline, another neat form of transport!
