Explore Kochi's pure rivers by traditional Japanese boat

Originating in the Heian period (794 – 1185), yakatabune are traditional roofed leisure boats where feudal lords, samurai warriors and wealthy merchants used to socialize over food and drinks. A variety of entertainment such as music performances and poetry recitals commonly added to the jolly mood onboard, offering guests a true escape from everyday busyness

You can still find yakatabune all across the country today, including along the crystal-clear Niyodo and Shimanto rivers

Dip your hands into the clean blue water, listen to the cicadas’ summer melodies, enjoy the popular bento lunch boxes made with local ingredients (reservations necessary), and let the serenity overcome your senses for a delightful ride
