Ryoma Sakamoto!

Every year in Kochi, a festival is held on the birthday of Ryoma Sakamoto, one of the most well-known historical figures in Japan.

Ryoma Sakamoto is lauded as a hero for having fought back against the government of the Tokugawa shogunate and contributing to the modernization of Japan.

Various events celebrating this man are held during the month of November.

And on the Sunday closest to November 15th, which is both the birth date and death anniversary of Ryoma Sakamoto, dance performances, stamp rallies and workshops take place at Katsurahama Park.

There are various monuments and locations in Kochi dedicated to Ryoma Sakamoto, and one of them is Ryoma's Birthplace Memorial Museum, where you can learn the details about Sakamoto's childhood and even take a picture with his statue in the inner garden.

It's amazing how even after so many years, the memory of this legend is still alive in Kochi.

If you happen to be in Kochi in November, be sure to enjoy the events held in memory of this historical figure.
