The Fascinating Art of "Hiburi-ryo" (Torchlight Fishing)
The "Hiburi-ryo" is a traditional method of fishing practiced in the Kochi region, where the fishermen use torches to scare sweetfish and lure them into their fishing nets.
During the night, the fishermen light their torches and wave them around from their houseboats. The undulating movements of their torches’ incandescent flames above the river water create a unique spectacle of light for all to see!
And all this so they can catch sweetfish! This just goes to show how much the locals truly appreciate the fish’s firm texture and mouthwatering flavor.
