Chikurinji

Chikurinji is a major temple in the city of Kochi, and one of the sites on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Chikurinji dates back to the early 8th century, and the “treasure hall” houses many sacred statues from that time period. And although this temple is known amongst travelers, many local students also visit it during exam season, as the temple is protected by Monju, a deity of wisdom.

Chikurinji also features several gardens registered as natural monuments. And during the summer season, lush, green leaves and verdant moss fill the temple grounds. Visitors who step in will instantly feel as if they have been transported to another land. It’s the perfect place become lost in thought without having to stray too far from the city, and simply enjoy the nature around you.
