Kochi Culture: Kaiyodo Hobby Museum Shimanto

That bright pop of color on the already verdant landscape of the rural Shimanto backcountry in western Kochi? It’s the bold exterior of the Kaiyodo Hobby Museum; it’s housed in a disused elementary school building to showcase the many creations of the Kaiyodo figurine company.

The inside is just as eye-catching as the building’s exterior, with a large-scale wooden ship playing host to numerous displays of painstakingly-crafted miniatures. The ship itself is surrounded by additional displays; you’ll even find an impressive T-Rex foot here that was used as a prop in the blockbuster-hit Jurassic park series.

Even if you think model warriors and weapons aren’t your thing, don’t miss the museum’s rear section, where the miniatures focus on scenes of daily life in long-ago Japan or traditional food and crafts.
