Around Kochi: The Gomen-Nahari Train Line

The Gomen-Nahari train line, also known as the Tosa Kuroshio Railway Asa Line, links central Kochi to sites in the Muroto Geopark on the prefecture’s eastern edge. While only running a length of 42 kilometers, the train provides access to such sightseeing destinations as the Ekingura Museum and temples along the Shikoku 88 Temple pilgrimage route.

A number of trains that run the route are decorated with cartoon figures on their side panels, while larger-size versions stand outside individual stations to welcome passengers aboard. These mascots were designed by Takashi Yanase, the Kochi-born animator most famous for the wildly popular kids’ series Anpanman.

If you time it right, you can enjoy a ride on one of the two train cars that sport an outside corridor, giving riders windowless views of the blue seas just beyond the rails.
