Furafu flags–eastern Kochi’s 400-year-old traditional craft

If you get to travel to eastern Kochi in early May around Children’s Day, you will see vibrant flags set up on poles, swirling in the spring breeze. These flags called furafu showcase colorful images of brave warriors, characters, and other bold motifs to wish for the health and happiness of particularly young boys

Mitani Somemono Limited Company is one of the few remaining businesses in the region that is determined to keep this only-in-Kochi tradition alive for future generations, just as it’s been since it’s said to have first begun more than 400 years ago. Here, you can see Yasukiyo Mitani (fourth-generation successor) putting utmost care, focus and passion into every single stroke to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece
