“The culture of osettai–where locals supported us through gifts like water, coffee, fruit, anything–stood out to us during our journey. People here have such open hearts even to strangers, and we were constantly inspired by their devotion to offering small acts of kindness.”
Erica and Ricky (@CaminoTellers) just completed the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage in November of this year, making their way around the entire island across four prefectures. The dynamic duo is based in the Canary Islands, Spain, offering guidance and retreats along the ancient pilgrim routes of the world-famous Camino de Santiago. Their guidance is centered around empowering people to own their journey and inner transformation. You can check out their YouTube channel and social media accounts linked below for more information!

“You will find delightful and unexpected surprises every day–just be open to them! Another important piece of advice would be to go slow. If you have time, don’t walk the pilgrimage in 45 days as the guidebooks say. Following a tight schedule from temple to temple is okay, but it can be an even more gratifying, rewarding and enriching experience to have the peace with time to get to know the locals, explore off the beaten paths, and discover hidden gems. We also advise you to invest in good shoes! A lot of the path features pavement so it may be best to use well-cushioned trail running shoes.”
“Together with everyone’s patience and kindness, we also managed to find our way in any situation despite our basic level in Japanese, so the language barrier should not be a reason for you to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience!”
