Retro vibes, tasty treats and friendly smiles in Kure Town

Around this time of year when the warm sun combines beautifully with the crisp air, I love to bundle up in my favorite kind of cozy-comfy fashion and take a daytrip from Kochi City. Located just 50 minutes from Kochi Station on the Dosan Line Limited Express train, Kure Town is the perfect destination!

The laundry dancing in the breeze, fishing boats gently rocking in the port, serene mountains all around, sleepy cats basking in the sun, so many bright smiles and friendly exchanges of ‘konnichiwa’ (good afternoon) with locals–taking a leisurely stroll here feels like such a beautiful insight into what life is like in the peaceful Japanese countryside

I eventually find my way to Kure Taishomachi Ichiba Market, which has been selling fresh fish and veggies for over 100 years! I can feel the history and tradition as I make my way through the retro alley decorated with brightly-colored fishermen’s flags. If you ever get to visit, I recommend trying the Kure-don, which is a bowl of fluffy rice topped with your choice of seafood from the catch of the day!

If you also have a sweet tooth like me, definitely stop by Nishimura Kashiten near the market’s entrance, which has been selling delicious bites since 1950!
