Exploring heaven (aka the Shimanto River) on two wheels

If you love cycling, the Shimanto River Valley area is a heavenly place. In fact, there is an actual cycling loop known as the Shimanto Heaven’s Road because of its otherworldly beauty

The approximately 134 kilometer-loop starts with the shimmering Pacific Ocean and white sand beaches between Shimanto City and Kuroshio Town. Then, the route swings into the mountains where you join the upper reaches of the Shimanto River. Follow the meandering course along Japan's last free-flowing river and make your way back to the area near the Pacific Ocean

The long distance and relatively high vertical gain can be challenging but great things require time and effort, right?

Thankfully, you will find a range of michi-no-eki (roadside rest areas) along the way where you can refuel on local delicacies. Michi-no-Eki Aguri Kubokawa is slightly off the road but comes at just the right time, after you have conquered the most challenging climb along the route. When the journey gets tough, just think about the juicy Shimanto pork lunch and the handmade ice cream waiting for you ahead!
