Ryoma Sakamoto was a Kochi-born samurai who played an instrumental role in overthrowing the feudal regime more than 150 years ago. He helped usher in the era of modernization, and consequently, continues to be one of Japan’s most respected historical figures. You can find his images and statues all over Kochi, but if you want to see the grandest of them all, head to Katsurahama Beach! At an impressive height of 13.5 meters, Ryoma looks out over the Pacific Ocean with his bold and determined expression
Also, if you get to visit anytime between now and May 28th, you’re in for an extra special treat! There's a temporary observation deck now set up so that visitors can get up close to the statue and gaze at the expansive horizon just like Ryoma
Located just 40 minutes from Kochi Station by bus, Katsurahama Beach is a wonderful getaway from the city! Take a relaxing stroll along the beach, witness the photogenic Watatsumi Shrine or learn all about Ryoma’s story at the history museum
