Pockets of autumn yellow are emerging across the majestic mountains around the Nagoya Chinkabashi (submersible bridge) and the Niyodo River is turning clear as ever. To prepare for your visit (one day, I hope), here are some Niyodo River quick facts you might not know
From the deep mountains to the Pacific Ocean, the Niyodo River runs for 124 kilometers. This makes it the third longest river in Shikoku, after the Shimanto and Yoshino rivers
Often called “Japan’s most beautiful river” or the “miracle stream”, the Niyodo River is famous for having a surreal “Niyodo Blue” color. The Nikobuchi plunge pool, located about one hour from Kochi City by car, is one of the best places to see the stunning cobalt blue. Although midday is the best time to witness Niyodo Blue as the sun shines directly from above, I personally like to arrive an hour or two before, to observe how the emerald shades evolve over time
Although beautiful throughout the year, the best time to visit the Niyodo River is…starting now! The waterway is at its clearest during the colder months between November and March when there are even fewer impurities in the water
Now, it's time for a quick tip! Located right beside the Niyodo River (just 10 minutes from Nagoya Chinkabashi by car) is a dreamy place to stay. Niyodo River House Kada can accommodate up to six people, and has all the retro charm of a traditional Japanese-style home, while offering modern additions for a comfortable stay like free Wi-Fi, washing machine, coffee maker, barbecue set for the terrace, and more!
