The heat is starting to fade in Kochi City, and the other day, I felt a cool, refreshing breeze. That's when I knew it was time to check out any seasonal foods at one of my favorite places in the world…the Sunday Market!
If you've ever visited a Japanese supermarket during autumn, you might have noticed the variety of seasonal snacks or pastries wrapped in adorable fall-themed packages (yes, we take our seasons very seriously here). In particular, sweet potatoes are THE iconic autumn food across the country, and if you're lucky, you might even see (and hear the jingle of) old-school trucks selling yaki imo (baked Japanese sweet potatoes). So, the freshly-fried imoten (fluffy, sweet potato tempura) sold at the Sunday Market is the perfect autumn snack! Warm, crunchy and rich, imoten uses a top-secret batter recipe that creates an indulgent autumn bite. YUM
The long, green vegetable that the adorable lady is holding in the top photo is another ingredient we must mention before summer officially ends. Ryukyu is a crunchy lotus stem that people typically enjoy by peeling its skin and rubbing salt on it to remove any bitterness. You can often find it marinated in vinegar and served alongside fresh fish, or as one of the ingredients of inaka-sushi, Kochi's traditional vegetable sushi
