The Ashizuri Underwater Observation Tower might be most known for its retro design, but it also offers one of the most low-impact ways of appreciating sea life
When you descend into the tower’s lower level, you might expect to see a monocled cartoon villain stroking a white cat, but instead, you’ll find large portholes looking out into the turquoise sea
Now, you’re on nature’s schedule
What you see and when you see it is not only dependent on weather and tidal conditions, but also, the whims of the beautiful creatures themselves. Porcupine fish, butterfly fish and girella are fairly common, but the patient (and lucky) observer might catch a glimpse of sea turtles and stingrays
It is very humbling to be reminded that Earth is not just our home. There are billions of beautiful, intelligent, and sentient creatures living free, beyond the places we’ve built. It puts my worries and fears into perspective, as I observe the graceful little fish navigating through the vast ocean
I smile as I remember one of my favorite movie quotes…just keep swimming! (Comment if you know which movie)
