During the last 30 years of his life, Claude Monet completed over 250 oil paintings of water lilies. He did so by observing the interactions among plants, light and water at his home garden in Giverny, France
But of course, before painting, there had to be planting
Based on Monet’s instructions, gardeners would set out on a small boat early in the morning, retrieve any discolored or wilted flowers, and even clean the dust off petals. Monet specifically ordered that “the surface of the water should be as clear as a mirror” and “the petals of the water lilies should open up in a round shape”
To this day, nearly 100 years after Monet’s passing, his wishes are still respected. Regardless of the pouring rain or blazing heat, gardeners at Monet’s Garden Marmottan in Kitagawa Village complete the same immaculate maintenance of the pond, as if Monet was still counting on it
This is just one glimpse into the enormous effort and love that the team at Monet's Garden Marmottan pour into ensuring that Monet’s legacy lives on
