Those who regularly follow our page (thank you!) will probably know all about Kochi’s ultimate comfort food, katsuo no tataki (seared bonito). However, today, we’re going from sea to river! Introducing…freshwater unagi (eel)
Located under 2 hours from Kochi City by car, Shimantoya has served some of the freshest unagi you can find for over 50 years. Caught straight from the crystal-clear Shimanto River, the wild unagi are charcoal-grilled to perfection, dipped into a sweet, tangy sauce, and served on fluffy rice. The second-floor terrace also offers panoramic views of the Shimanto River, which sure adds to the epic dining experience
Fun fact! Packed with nutritious vitamins, unagi is said to help revive your energy and appetite during the blazing hot summers. Surely a tidbit to keep in mind if (when) you're in Japan during the warm seasons!
