Located in Kubokawa Town near the headwaters of the Shimanto River, Iwamoto-ji Temple is a must-visit spot for anyone (not just pilgrims)!
If you’re an art-lover, you could probably spend hours gazing up at the hundreds of painted tiles that decorate the ceiling of the temple’s main hall. Since each painting was donated by a different artist in Japan, it’s so fun to see the variety of styles blend together beautifully into one masterpiece. See if you can spot some of our favorites…Marilyn Monroe and a fluffy white cat!
Did you know that the temple is also a hub for visitors seeking meaningful experiences, both spiritual and leisure?
Zen meditation along (and sometimes IN!) the clear waters of the Shimanto River and sutra writing might be experiences you expect at a temple, but how about camping, yoga, an outdoor sauna, tuk-tuk tours or sake tastings? No matter your interests, you’re sure to find fun at Iwamoto-ji Temple!
To get the most out of this old-meets-new wonderland, definitely stay overnight! We highly recommend the traditional Japanese room that has been given a pop-art makeover by well-known Japanese artist SHETA
