Naturally Kochi: Ioki Cave

Just a few meters off the main road through the town of Aki hides a cave that was formed by waves and weathering over 2 million years ago. Rock formations soon opened up into a grotto filled with around 40 species of ferns, a remarkable concentration of diversity in such a small place.

A walking path winds through the jungle-like surroundings before leading hikers through Kochi’s farm fields and rice paddies back to the main road. While fording streams and crossing log bridges adds to the sense of adventure, visitors should be sure to wear sturdy, non-slip footwear.
