Autumn is all about…rice!

When you think autumn, things like maple leaves, campfires, pumpkins, and Halloween might come to mind. But for farmers along the Shimanto River, this season is all about rice

In many of the major rice-producing areas in Japan, September and October is shinmai (“new rice”) season, which refers to the rice harvested, processed and packaged for sale up to December 31 of that year. Shinmai has a higher water content than komai (“old rice” harvested in the previous season), which means it requires less water to cook, and produces a more glossy, moist and aromatic bowl

Although hiking along places like Kuroson Gorge to see the beautiful autumn colors is a must, don’t miss breathing in the sweet, straw-like scent of the ripe rice, with its glorious golden green color. Take a moment to watch the local farmers during this very special time of the year, harvesting the beautiful product of their long months of hard work, patience and care
