Rogier Uitenboogaart arrived in Japan from the Netherlands 40 years ago, driven by his desire to learn the ins and outs of making washi, traditional Japanese paper. In 2006, Rogier opened Washi Studio Kamikoya to help preserve this craft that dates back over 1400 years
Located on the slopes of the Shikoku Mountains in Yusuhara, Kamikoya offers visitors a rare, hands-on experience of making washi and seeing how the bark off mulberry trees is dried, broken down and combined with adhesive okra extract to produce this beautifully textured and entirely sustainable paper
For the full experience, spend a night or two at the Japanese-style guesthouse decorated with Rogier’s handmade washi lamps, and immerse yourself in the serenity of Kochi’s countryside
