Sakamoto Ryoma was a Kochi-born hero who helped end the over 250-year-long feudal age in 1868, propelling Japan forward into the age of modernization
Ryoma’s journey to topple the Tokugawa regime was no easy endeavor, beginning with the incredibly difficult yet necessary decision to leave his clan. At the time, this was a crime called "dappan, " which was punishable by death! But Ryoma knew it was the only way he could unite with like-minded individuals to liberate Japan from feudalism
Around the beautiful town of Yusuhara, you can hike the same path taken by then 27-year-old Ryoma, as he traveled through the mountains in straw sandals, carefully avoiding authority checkpoints. The clearly-marked “Dappan no Michi” trail includes places like Mishima Shrine, where Ryoma supposedly prayed for a successful journey, and the Kakehashi house where he planned his escape
