Rice is an essential part of the Japanese diet, and in mountainous Kochi farmers had to come up with extra ingenious ways to grow this crop. Across the prefecture you will find carefully terraced rice fields along steep mountainsides. The fields are particularly beautiful during the spring planting season (when you can see clouds reflected in the water), the lush summer and right before harvest in the autumn, when the stalks turn gold and are heavy with rice.
