Iwama Low Water Bridge

Iwama Low Water Bridge

Built in 1966, this is one of Kochi's chinkabashi, bridges designed to withstand floods from rainstorms. Although it normally serves as a crossing for vehicles, as well as pedestrians, during storms, it becomes submerged underwater.

Although there are many chinkabashi along the Shimanto river, Iwama Chinkabashi is the one featured most in TV commercials and merchandise such as postcards. Enjoy recreational activities with the bridge and surrounding scenery as the backdrop, such as cycling, or canoeing on the river.

This bridge also used to serve as part of the route for the Shimanto River Ultra Marathon. Although the marathon will not be taking place this year, we have hope that it will resume in the future, so if you happen to be in Kochi then, why not take part?
