Taste of Kochi: Kure Taisho Town Market

Taste of Kochi: Kure Taisho Town Market

With its miles of coastline and easy access to the ocean, Kochi is rightfully famed for its seafood. A wander of the retro-style Kure Taisho market in the western part of the prefecture offers a tasty glimpse of what’s in season, from fugu and flounder to skipjack tuna and even strawberries.

The market began in the 1880s when the wives of local fishermen would gather to receive the morning’s catch from their husbands and sell it to residents of the area. Today, many of the stalls are still manned by female merchants and supplied by their seafaring spouses.

A highlight of a trip to the market is a chance to select the fish of your choice from the fishmongers at Tanaka Sengyoten and have it sliced up into delectable sashimi at the restaurant opposite, Ryoshigoya. Complete your meal with a bowl of rice and the restaurant’s hearty miso soup.
