Located about 20 minutes from downtown Kochi City by car, Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine hosts a fun (and definitely unique) festival for three days, starting on the first Saturday of April. This Doronko (muddy) Festival has been going on for over 400 years, and is all about wishing for a bountiful harvest and good health
After rice planting is completed by women wearing yukata (traditional Japanese clothing), it’s tradition for them to smear mud on the faces of male spectators! It is believed that men who get smeared won’t suffer from summer illnesses
