wamoto-ji located in Shimanto Town is no ordinary temple, but a marvel filled with art. You could spend all day looking up at the 575 square paintings that cover the entire ceiling of the main hall (see if you can spot the portrait of Marilyn Monroe)! It is worth visiting no matter the time of year, but there’s a special event taking place right now (free admission)! Perfect for getting into the holiday spirit–this event is all about lights!
You will find vibrant colors lighting up the temple grounds and collaborating with beautiful bamboo stalks that have artsy designs (like smiley faces, at least as seen last year) as well as traditional Japanese-style umbrellas. Not only do the fantastical lights combine majestically with the over 1,000-year-old temple, it’s also a great opportunity to meet locals, and potentially other visitors too!
