Located just 30 minutes from Kochi Station on the MY-YU sightseeing bus, Chikurin-ji Temple provides a calming contrast to the vibrancy of the downtown area. This temple–also the 31st stop on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage–is worth visiting at any time of the year, but the grounds are particularly beautiful during autumn
Magnificent maple trees turn gorgeous shades of red that perfectly match the temple’s vermillion five-storied pagoda, spread over paths that weave between moss-covered rocks
Be sure not to miss the 14th-century Japanese-style garden, which can be viewed from the temple’s library for a small fee. Spending some time in quiet appreciation of the sublime view from the engawa (narrow deck that runs along the side of a traditional Japanese house) is likely to be one of your favorite memories from your trip to Kochi. You can further enhance the experience by joining one of the meditation and sutra transcription sessions offered at the temple
