How to use the Tosaden Tram Line

If you’re in Kochi City, I highly recommend hopping on the Tosaden Tram Line! Its variety of designs, old-school windows, analog signs and other retro features will surely capture your heart. But how exactly do you ride one? Here’s a basic guide to help you out

There are two doors…where do I enter and exit?

Enter the tram through the door at the tail end, and exit at the front by the driver.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

Nope! When you hop on the tram (remember, at the tail end), you will see two machines. If you have the prepaid, rechargeable IC card called Desuca, tap it on the card reader. If you're paying in cash, grab a seiri-ken (numbered ticket) from the other machine.

When you’re ready to get off, walk to the front of the tram by the driver, where you’ll find another set of machines. If you have the Desuca IC card, tap it on the reader again to automatically process your payment (the cost changes depending on how many stops you ride). If you have a seiri-ken, there will be a number written on it, which corresponds to a price on the digital display onboard. After confirming your price for the ride, drop the exact amount in the appropriate box along with your seiri-ken (see below for more information).

Points to note

As you’re approaching the station you want to get off, make sure to press the button by the windows. This indicates to the driver to stop at the next station (otherwise, they will think no one is getting off and keep driving to ensure efficiency).

When you pay by cash, you won’t get any change back. So, make sure you can pay the exact price! One of the machines at the front of the tram can exchange 1,000-yen bills for coins if you need, but it always helps to be prepared with some change beforehand.

Bonus...yummy tip!

If you’re looking for a delicious spot to grab breakfast before exploring Kochi City by tram, check out Kissa Depot!
