Travel back in time

Not only is this 400-year-old architectural marvel one of Japan’s twelve remaining original castles, but it’s also conveniently located at the heart of the city. This means there are numerous ways you can combine visiting the castle with other fun activities and sightseeing spots around the city!

If you can time it right, I highly recommend the epic Sunday Market and Kochi Castle combo!

Head to the Sunday Market in the morning–snack on imoten (fluffy sweet potato tempura), manju (traditional Japanese flour-based pastry) filled with delicious red bean paste, or aisukurin (dairy-based sorbet), as you explore the hundreds of stalls. At the same time, pick up lunch items for later (trust me, I have an idea)! Inaka-sushi (vegetable sushi), yakitori (charcoal-grilled chicken), and hashimaki (savory Japanese pancake wrapped around a pair of chopsticks) are some of the many tasty foods worth trying. Once your tummy is satisfied for now and you’ve secured your feast for later, it’s time to head inside Kochi Castle!

For only 420 yen per adult, you can explore the castle’s tenshu (highest tower), which has six floors. From miniature models of the castle grounds in earlier times to original tatami (traditional straw flooring) dating back to the Edo Period (1603 - 1868), every floor is packed with deep insight into the castle’s long history. Once you’re at the top, you will be rewarded with an expansive 360-degree view of the city

Make your way back down and take a stroll around the castle grounds–this time in search of the perfect picnic spot. Once you find it, take out the lunch items you secured earlier and enjoy an epic feast with an epic castle view
