The story of cherry blossoms in retro Sakawa Town

Located only 30 minutes from Kochi Station by train, Sakawa is home to several spots that are particularly worth visiting in spring. Kasuga River, for example, runs through the heart of the charming old town and offers surreal views of cherry blossoms collaborating with the crystal-clear water

Makino Park is another must-visit spot, which is dedicated to Sakawa-born botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino. Also known as the father of Japanese botany, Makino gifted cherry tree seeds to his hometown in 1902, which were sown on the hill around Seigen-ji Temple. Although these original trees were lost during World World II, the locals decided to revive the area in 1956. As a result of their extensive replanting efforts and maintenance, we can now enjoy over 17 varieties of cherry trees that turn the landscape pink between early February to mid-April

This year, the Makino Park Sakura Festival is also taking place between March 20 and April 9! Pick up some delicious local sake in town at Kochi’s oldest brewery called Tsukasabotan, choose your favorite yummy treat like cherry blossom-flavored sweet mochi dumplings at one of the festival food stands, lay out a blanket and enjoy an epic spring picnic
