The Shimanto River Valley is one of Kochi’s most picturesque regions. For most of the year, you can expect views of crystal-clear water carving its way through deep green mountains, but visit in the colder months, and you might be treated to a rare snowfall, which transforms the valley into a winter wonderland.
If you are lucky enough to visit during one of the area’s relatively rare snowstorms, be sure to drive carefully, especially if attempting to cross the river’s narrow chinkabashi (submersible bridges)! It may take longer than usual to get around this winter wonderland, but perhaps there is no lovelier place to spend a day or two cozying up in a blanket, sipping on delicious coffee or tea and enjoying the magical views. Certainly check out @Shimanto Riverside Hideaway, which is a traditional Japanese-style guesthouse with everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay among the mountains (free Wi-Fi, fully-equipped kitchen, and more).
