Just under an hour north of Kochi City by car is Sameura Canoe Terrace, which is an outdoor-lover’s dream (even in winter✨). The calm waters of Sameura Lake along the pristine Yoshino River make canoeing and standup paddleboarding (SUP) enjoyable for everybody, including beginners and children

Prefer land activities? Explore the area with a rental bicycle or spend a few nights stargazing from your tent at the camping area overlooking the gorgeous lake (free Wi-Fi, outlets, showers and bathrooms available). If you’re looking for more modern comfort, I recommend staying at Sameuraso Lakeside Hotel, which offers guest rooms with lots of cozy yet stylish wooden features

Whether you’re staying a couple of nights or just passing by, definitely stop by the hotel’s restaurant, which is one of the best places to savor Tosa Akaushi “miracle” wagyu beef. Limited to only 500 head of cattle per year and said to have up to four times the umami of more common black-haired wagyu beef, Tosa Akaushi is the epitome of melt-in-your-mouth goodness
