Located just 30 minutes from downtown Kochi City on the MY-YU sightseeing bus, Chikurin-ji Temple is a beautiful place to visit, especially in autumn. The name literally translates to “bamboo forest temple”, and indeed, you will find some bamboo groves, but most eyes are on the magnificent maple trees around this time of year
The autumn colors perfectly match the vermillion five-storied pagoda and add rich tones to the peaceful Japanese-style garden nearby. The garden, which dates back to the 14th century, is registered as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, and you can enjoy a breathtaking view from the temple’s library for a small fee
Fun fact! Chikurin-ji Temple has strong connections with Chinese culture, which inspired the garden's design. The main deity enshrined here, Monju Bosatsu, represents wisdom and also has roots in China. He is often portrayed riding on a lion (a symbol of prosperity and success) while carrying a sword, cutting through the clouds of illusion and leading to enlightenment????
With the nights drawing in and important entrance exams for high school or college students on the horizon, autumn is frequently said to be the prime season for hitting the books in Japan. If you’re seeking some divine support in your studies (or life in general), perhaps now is the best time to visit Chikurin-ji Temple, ask Monju for success, and calm your nerves by surrounding yourself in the delights of the seasonal foliage
