Greeting the dawn at the edge of Shikoku

The weather can get wild on Kochi’s remote Muroto Peninsula, which pierces the Pacific Ocean like an arrow. When I arrived on my last visit, lashing rain and strong winds shook my hotel room windows. Far beyond what brochures could ever express, I witnessed an impressive display of nature’s power

The next morning, however, I awoke to clear skies, painted purple and red. I hurried out to catch the sunrise and took a stroll through part of Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark

Under the soft and peaceful morning light, I walked along the path that led me through giant rock formations. Little red crabs scuttled across the boardwalk and raindrops glistened on flower petals. On a platform that looked beyond the towering Eboshi Rock (named after a Shinto priest hat with a similar shape), I came across a lady meditating as the sun started to rise

I felt so grateful for this unplanned excursion. It was the kind of unexpected delight that Kochi so often rewards the unhurried traveler
