Konatsu
'Tis the season of konatsu citrus fruits! Also known as “new summer orange”, konatsu are both sweet and sour. Enjoy the soft white pith and juicy flesh for a healthy, refreshing summer snack. Definitely keep your eyes *peeled* for this one at Kochi City's Sunday Market!
Pro tip! If the konatsu of your choosing turns out a little too sour, sprinkling a little salt can help make it taste sweeter
Fruit Tomato
The age-old mystery…are tomatoes fruits or vegetables!? Well, we don’t have a universal answer, but you can find a variety called ‘fruit tomato’ at Sunday Market, which is indeed as sweet as peaches or figs!
Although you can find fruit tomatoes across Japan, Kochi is said to be the origin
In 1970, after a strong typhoon hit Kochi City, seawater flew into the veggie farms along the coastline. To the farmers’ utter surprise, the tomatoes tasted very sweet when harvested. It turns out that tomatoes get sweeter when they grow under a level of stress. Who knew!
