A garden created with love in 1364

The retro town of Sakawa, located a quick train ride away from Kochi Station, is home to delicious sake, glorious cherry blossoms, and one of Kochi's most beautiful Japanese-style gardens

At Jodai-ji Temple, a 15-minute walk from Sakawa Station, you will find this traditional water garden with a variety of seasonal flowers like camellias, cherry blossoms and azaleas

Centuries ago, a samurai named Shigetada Fukao created the garden as a ‘thank you’ gift to the temple, because his sick wife quickly recovered after he prayed there for her good health. Even after so many years, today the peaceful garden remains a symbol of Shigetada’s love for his wife, and offers healing to everyone who visits

Visit Jodai-ji Temple to immerse yourself in the tiny, handmade heaven that one man created to celebrate his loved one’s recovery

The garden is currently closed due to the pandemic
