Here in Kochi, we love a good party, and that’s what Tosa no Okyaku is all about. After being cancelled for three years, this festival is finally scheduled to return to Kochi City this month (under appropriate coronavirus guidelines)
Friends, families, co-workers and even strangers come together across the city to enjoy excellent sake and sawachi cuisine (huge platters loaded with Kochi’s best seafood, stewed veggies, deep-fried finger foods, etc.)
First and foremost though, you must be wondering…what are those funny-looking masks?????✨
The masks resemble ""shibaten,"" a mystical creature from Kochi’s old legends who’s always playful and jolly. This spirit definitely captures the drinking culture in Kochi, which is one reason why shibaten has become somewhat of a symbol of Tosa no Okyaku
