The sunrise of good fortune

In Japan, there is a custom of waking up early (or staying up all night) and watching the sunrise on January 1st. It’s called hatsuhinode (the first sunrise of the year) and it brings you good luck for the new year!

But there is an even more special sunrise in Kochi! It’s called a daruma sunrise Daruma are traditional charm dolls that are said to bring you good luck.

A daruma sunrise is a mirage that causes the sun to look like a daruma doll floating on the ocean, and it occurs when there is a large temperature difference between the ocean and the air. Because of its rarity, daruma sunrises are said to bring good luck to those who see one

Not a morning person? Here are 4 of the best places to catch a daruma sunset: https://visitkochijapan.com/en/highlights/darumasunset
